Our aims are: to promote interest in the local history of Northumberland; to offer support and guidance to affiliated societies; to encourage the formation of new local history societies or groups in Northumberland; to encourage research and the recording of local history in the county.
Our activities include: an annual journal - 'Tyne & Tweed' - usually published in the autumn each year and free to members; an annual One Day School held at a different location in the county each year and based on a local theme, with respected, high-quality speakers; an annual Round the County Day hosted by a different affiliated society each year; a Research Project in which affiliated societies may participate and the results of which are displayed at an appropriate A.G.M. before being deposited in the County Record Office at Woodhorn..
The Association was originally founded in 1966 as the Northumberland Local History Society, with the remit of drawing together groups and individuals interested in the history of the historic county of Northumberland, and encouraging and supporting the formation of local history societies in the county. It provided a publication to record items of local historical interest that might otherwise remain unpublished, and meetings on historical topics of county-wide importance.
In 1979 the Society changed its name to the Association of Northumberland Local History Societies (ANLHS) and became an 'umbrella' organisation to its membership as well as a registered charity. Currently our membership consists of 52 affiliated local history societies or groups, 85 individual members and 13 institutional members.
The Association has a Council consisting of representatives from its membership which meets twice per year and acts as a link and an advisory body to the Association's elected Executive Committee. The Executive Committee administers the business and development of the Association in line with the needs of its members, organises the annual Programme of Events, the Research Project and produces our annual journal.
